We all are selling something. Maybe you don’t realize it but you are selling something . Consultants are selling their time, candidates are trying to sell themselves, men and women constantly try to sell themselves to the other (or the same) sex. We are all marketing something, some better than the other. The moment you realize that everyone is trying to market themselves, the scale of competition automatically becomes clear. It is huge. There are a lot more people trying to market the same thing that you are trying to push and all of them are your competition.
It is scary.
At this point the are two things that you can do. Continue the same path you were taking before you made this realization or do something to get ahead if the completion. If you are one of the people who choose the first option you can stop reading any further and enjoy your life as it is. But if you want to beat the rest the first and the most important question you need to answer is - what makes you different. If you do the same things that every other person is going than you are the part of a pile. You could be in the pile of resumes that are stacked on a recruiters desk, a pile of sales proposals or a pile of marriage proposals. If you are the part of a pile and every other member of that pile is just like you, why should you be chosen? Why should you get the job, the project or the hand in marriage. This is a question that you need to answer yourself first and the world later. If you can’t find something which makes you different then it us still not lost. Start building that difference. Find out where you can excel and work on it. Take help if you have to but do it. It is this difference that will make you stand out of the pile. Innovate.
I am an online marketer. Not so surprisingly almost every person on my timeline is a “social media expert” or at least they claim they are. No matter how many of them actually are online marketers, it increases the competition for me. To succeed in such a crowd I need to be different. Remarkable. We at Green Apple Solutions(my venture) have created this difference by leveraging our strength in technology to build frameworks that can be molded and designed on requirement basis to utilize the best of online marketing. This helped us in conquering not just the social media, but the entire online marketing spectrum. Just because we chose to stand out of the pile.
Excellence is doing whatever you do in the best possible manner. And if you just do what everyone is doing then there is not scope for excellence.
